Day 14

In 40 days in the word, Blog

SCRIPTURE

He said:
“Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made. ‘But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.
Matthew 5: 33-37

MEDITATION

  1. What characteristics do heaven, earth, Jerusalem, or our head share that contribute this prohibition against oaths?
  2. Christ followers should be men or women of their word by letting their yes and no be true. What is another word for this type of characteristic?
  3. Why is a anything more than letting our word speak for itself from the evil one?
  4. Reflect on the integrity of your words. Is there anything you need to confess to God or bless him for in regards to this issue?

PRAYER

“Father, I want to be like you and be a person of my word. Keep me from the temptation to have to strengthen my word with impressive phrases. May my light shine today in how I speak and follow through with what I say. Amen.”
